What is Habitat for Humanity of Bulloch County?

Habitat for Humanity of Bulloch County is a non-profit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry seeking to eliminate poverty housing, and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action.  Habitat invites people from all walks of life to work together in partnership to build houses with families in need.  Since its start in 1991, Habitat for Humanity of Bulloch County has built 30 houses throughout Bulloch County.

Habitat for Humanity of Bulloch County serves Bulloch County, Georgia, and is directed by a volunteer board of directors, with a full-time Executive Director, Office Manager and part-time Construction Manager.

What does Habitat for Humanity of Bulloch County do and how does it work?

Habitat for Humanity of Bulloch County is not a charity or a give-away program.  Habitat for Humanity builds houses with Bulloch County families in need.  Volunteer labor is used to keep building costs low for Habitat families.  Partner families pay a down payment and a monthly mortgage payment.  They also invest hundreds of hours of their own labor "sweat equity" into building their own houses and the houses of others.

The completed houses are sold to the homeowners at cost and financed with a zerp percent interest mortgage.   As Habitat homeowners pay their mortgages, the money helps the Affiliate build houses with other families.  Habitat for Humanity of Bulloch County also contributes to Habitat for Humanity International to help build houses overseas.

How are partner families selected?

Habitat for Humanity of Bulloch County accepts applications from local families on an annual basis.  The Family Selection committee reviews the applications and chooses families based on their need for better shelter, their willingness to become partners in the program, and their ability to repay the no-interest mortgage.  Applicants must have lived or worked in Bulloch County for at least one year at the time of application. Neither race nor religion is a factor in choosing partner families.

The selection process begins with an Application Fair, which is normally held each spring. Anyone interested in applying for a Habitat home must attend one of these fairs to get an application. To be notified of the date of the Application Fairs, send an email with your name and mailing address to

Where are Habitat for Humanity of Bulloch County’s houses built and who builds them?

In 2003, Habitat for Humanity of Bulloch County entered an agreement with the City of Statesboro to build on the remaining lots in the Statesboro Pointe Subdivision, originally developed by the City to provide affordable housing to the community.  Until the 21 lots in the subdivision are completed, we will build primarily in Statesboro Pointe, which is located near the intersection of Proctor and West Main Streets.

Habitat for Humanity of Bulloch County partners with a number of church, business, civic groups and other organizations to build Habitat houses.

Sponsors commit to raise a specific amount of money, about 60 percent of the construction cost, for their house, and, usually, to provide volunteers for Saturday work days on the house. The balance of the cost of building the house comes from fundraising activities and general donations to the affiliate.

Building Around the World

A portion of general donations and income from special events is contributed to Habitat for Humanity International to support building around the world. In the past year we have contributed to building in the Honduras and Southeast Asia for tsunami relief. We also accept donations for a Bulloch County contribution to hurricane rebuilding in the Gulf Coast.
